Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery Diet and Nutrition

Weight loss surgery is a complicated process and thus patient need to take care of diet and nutrition following the surgery. Gastric band surgery is an effective form of weight loss surgery for severely obese people who have failed to lose weight after exhaustive dieting and exercising. But for successful and risk-free weight loss, patient needs to follow a restrictive gastric band diet.

Gastric band is a type of weight loss surgery in which the size of the stomach is reduced using an adjustable band. This reduces the capacity of stomach to hold food and such that patient are allowed only to eat small meals. A proper diet is very important to follow at least for few months following the surgery in order to avoid complications like band slippage and band erosion.

During first to three days following the surgery, patients are advised to rely on liquid diet. Avoid coffee, tea or soda for at least first three months after the surgery. Because these carbonated foods nay cause gas, bloating and other complications. In second phase i.e. after 4 to 5 weeks, you can consume semi-liquid diet. Protein shakes, soups and sugar-free gelatins in your diet.

Next from six week onwards, diet may include fruits, vegetables, salads, fish, beans etc. After surgery, new stomach is able to hold only 4-5 ouncesof food and such that patients are allowed to take only small meals.

Guidelines for Adjustable gastric band diet:

  1. Chew your food slowly
  2. Take three small meals a day
  3. Drink plenty of water
  4. Avoid carbonated beverages and foods
  5. Avoid spicy and fried foods
  6. Include some physical activity in your daily routine
